Including why he wore a pink suit and matching scrunchie

The Oscars are all about celebrating the best films of the year. And while Jason Momoa‘s Aquaman didn’t make the nominations, that didn’t stop the man from making his own behind-the-scenes movie about the star-studded event.

Momoa’s video goes a long way to explaining a few interesting tidbits from the event: including his outlandish pink velvet tuxedo (rumoured to be the last suite that the late Karl Lagerfeld touched before his death) as well as the scrunchie he wore on the red carpet.

Both Momoa and his wife Lisa Bonet looked amazing on the red carpet, but it turns out there is a good reason for that. One of Momoa’s hair stylists gave him the original scrunchie, which he calls, “just fantastic”. He showed it to the creative heads of Fendi, who then passed it on to Lagerfeld – and the idea to make Momoa a suit based from the same colour and material was born.

Lagerfeld and team put together some sketches – for a light pink, red carpet suit and a darker shaded after-party garment – as well as matching dress for the star’s wife, then sent all three pieces to Los Angeles ahead of the Oscars 2019. The results? One epic outfit.

“You know how Prince had purple, and Momoa has pink,” says stylist Jeanne Yang, who dressed both Momoa and Bonet for the event. “I knew we had to do something great so I sent [the team] some ideas, and of course Mr Lagerfeld and Silvia Venturini Fendi loved it.”

Speaking about the suit, Momoa said he loved it. “I have never, ever, ever, ever had a suit made for me before. And to think that this was the last thing that Uncle Karl [Lagerfeld] touched. It’s an honour”. He followed up his tribute to the iconic designer by commenting, “Pink on pink look good”.

The short film goes on to show Momoa and wife heading to the Oscars (bottle of bubbly in hand) and scoffing candy moments before the red carpet, before picking up after the show leading to the after party.
