Two of the biggest names in Formula One will be missing from the new Netflix miniseries on the sport. Both Ferrari and Mercedes in 2018 refused to participate and didn’t allow film crews access to shoot during production for the upcoming “Formula One: Drive to Survive”.
Netflix has revealed that its highly-anticipated Formula 1 series will launch on the service on March 8.
Titled ‘Formula 1: Drive to Survive’, the series is a gripping, high-octane 10 part series which is the first to give exclusive and intimate access to the greatest racing competition in the world.
Viewers will finally be able to see what it takes to fight to be number one in this multi-billion-dollar business. However, the makers of the behind-the-scenes documentary have accused Mercedes and Ferrari of letting down F1 by not taking part in the programme.
Executive producer Paul Martin said:
“They did a slight disservice to the fans and the sport by not taking part. It was going to be all or nothing, and if those terms were good enough for the eight other teams, it should have been good enough for Mercedes and Ferrari, too.”

Sebastian Vettel versus Lewis Hamilton has been the must-watch rivalry in the sport over the last five years. So it doesn’t come as a surpirse that last year’s season-long battle for the championship between Ferrari and Mercedes helped drive 10% growth in unique viewership for F1 worldwide and made the sport the fastest growing in the world on social media.
However, a Mercedes spokesperson said:
“Competing for the world championship is an all-consuming business that demands every ounce of focus from the entire team; we are driven first and foremost by performance in every decision we make.”
As two teams that are in all probablity the flagbearers of the sport, it falls on to them to also promote it. Allowing fans an insight into how they work, along with the trials and tribulations of what it takes to compete at the highest level of motorsport, would shut down critics who think the sport is a fad.
Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel’s rivalry has dominated the sport since the latter’s Red Bull Racing days, and many say they bring out both the best and the worst out of each other.
The behind-the scenes footage shows a multitude of scenes not usually visible to the sport’s fans.
