Dave Chappelle – the comedian’s comedian – is obviously highly protective of his act. And rightly so.
Chappelle came back to stand-up comedy after a brief hiatus, and has since been filling out theatres all over the United States. He’s also filmed not one, but two Netflix Comedy Specials (and if rumours are true, there’s a lot more in the works).
More importantly, he’s coming back to Dubai for a one-night show on November 20th. The comedian hasn’t been back in the Emirate since 2015 when his sell-out show took place during the Dubai Comedy Festival, and if the last one was any indication, it’s going to sell out quickly.
However, comedy-fans need to be aware of one niggling rule you need to follow to get into the show: you have to leave your phone at home.
Yes, organizers Live Nation Middle East say the show will have a strict ‘No Cell Phones Allowed’ policy in place, and urge guests to leave their phone either at home or in their car. All guests will be searched on entry, and any mobile phones found will be confiscated and put in a locked pouch until after the show.
According to the organizers, without a smartphone, the audience is now “free to enjoy the night for what it is, an untarnished live performance from one of the best comedic talents in the world.”
What’s Dave Chappelle got against your mobile phone? Chances are he’ll be trying out new material on the night (there’s no better place to do that than in a completely different country) and doesn’t want any new jokes slipping out on social media.
Those Netflix specials don’t write themselves, right?
