It’s a sad day for all cinephiles out there as Daniel Day-Lewis – the only performer to ever win three Best Actor Academy Awards – has officially retired from acting. Announcing the news through his spokeswoman Leslee Dart, Day-Lewis himself, who has just finished up filming the upcoming ‘Phantom Thread’ with long-time collaborator Paul Thomas Anderson, is yet to provide an official reason for his retirement.
However, considering the pedigree and staggeringly impressive oeuvre of the man in question, do we really need a reason?
A true once-in-a-lifetime-talent, Day-Lewis might even achieve more in retirement than most mere mortals have are able to achieve in their entire lifetime, if he is able to surpass his tally of three Oscars with his final performance in the Phantom Thread (scheduled for release on December 25, 2017). Considering the stellar performances that we’ve grown to expect from the man, we could hardly say this would come as a surprise.
Having won his previous Oscars in My Left Foot (1999), There Will Be Blood (2007), and Lincoln (2012), there’s no doubt that Day-Lewis will be forever remembered throughout time as one of the finest actors to ever grace the silver screen.
Somewhat notorious for his ‘method’ acting and intense commitment to character, we can only hope that Daniel is still out there drinking someone’s milkshake.
