-The Esquire 100 - Mohanad Al Hattab
Mohanad Al Hattab is a Syrian comedian, who found a sizeable following via his amusing skits on Instagram and Vine.
His low-budget, Arab-language impersonations have quickly seen him grow a loyal social-media audience that really resonates with his characters.
What is it about your comedy that hits a note with people?
My comedy is character-based, and regionally relevant. I started developing the fictional characters that I’ve always had in my head, and acting them out. Then people online started developing relationships with them! Now I get people stopping me on the street, asking “How’s Hassan?”, or “How’s Rajesh?”. They are just the characters that I’ve created.
Where do they come from?
My number one comedy influence is my family, especially the ones that live in Syria. Every time I go back, I get a lot of material from watching them.
