Winning by a whisker

To help our readers negotiate their way through Movember, we ask the UAE’s top barbers what they have on their shelves. If it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for us:

Beard Oil, Captain Fawcett and Ricki Hall

“London-based Captain Fawcett collaborated with tattoo-and-beard poster boy, Ricki Hall, to create the Booze & Baccy beard oil that I’m
totally obsessed with. It’s a rich and deep blend of manly musk including honeyed fresh tobacco leaves, woody oak moss and notes of fresh hops. Gently brush a couple of drops through your beard with a beard comb for a handsome finish.”
Dan Mellor, Head Barber, Akin Barber & Shop, Burj Al Salam, Dubai

Razors, Truefitt & Hill

“For the perfect shave, you need to have the right tools. I like to use razors from British brand Truefitt & Hill. I change the blades meticulously, because when you shave you scrape off around two layers of surface skin, so a blunt razor will make the skin feel scratchy and can cause infection.”
Badr Sammie, Barber, 1847, Emirates Towers, Dubai

Pre-shave oil, Kevin Murphy

Before shaving, we always apply a pre-shave oil to moisturise the beard. We use products by Kevin Murphy and massage them into the skin before applying the shaving gel. The pre-shave oil helps to reduce inflammation and irritation of the skin.

Aftershave Balm, Gentlemen’s Tonic

For short beards, I recommend applying Gentlemen’s Tonic aftershave balm. It includes aloe vera, which helps cool the skin beneath the hair, while the use of Brazil nut helps prevent trans-epidermal water loss.
