During a casual stroll through one of this region’s many (many) malls, you’re likely to see a whole host of hairstyles. Side-parts, top-knots, man-buns and quiffs – how on earth is a man meant to keep up with what is currently ‘on trend’?
Seeing as we can’t all just keep copying David Beckham our whole lives, we spoke to celebrity hairdresser at La Loge (Montgomerie Golf Club) and all-around hairstyle sage Jean-Marc Brun who gave us the low down on the top trends to look out for this year. Clippers at the ready…

The fifties slick
Jean-Marc: I think this hairstyle is really chic. One must have good hair in terms of texture and thickness in order to get this hairstyle and maintain it. This hairstyle does not work for men with thin hair as it doesn’t sit well and will be hard to maintain. It will also not look as good as with those with thick hair. I’d wear a ‘Fifties Slick’ either with a part or back-work. One thing I’d watch out for is to ensure your hair doesn’t look too shiny. It ends up looking very passé.
How to Maintain: Use very little product such as a little bit of wax or pomade, and you’re good to go.
Works for: A trendy night out, cocktail party or work.
Redefined fringes
Jean-Marc: I’m not crazy about this hairstyle – it’s a little bit younger Justin Bieber, revisited three years ago. I like it but I think it makes one look childish and boyish. It’s better for people with lesser hair as it is a great hairstyle to hide baldness.
How to Maintain: This is super easy to maintain, the lesser product used, the better!
Works for: Work (it can be parted slightly) and Play
Modern side partings
Jean-Marc: I think this hairstyle is great. A lot of people these days part it furth with a clipper i.e. shave the parting itself a little to make it more defined. However, I think it looks great when the style has a natural parting, with shorter hair at the back – this gives it a more balanced look.
How to Maintain: It is very easy to maintain and works very well on most hair types. All you need is a little blow dry to add some volume on the top and some pomade or hairspray to hold, if it doesn’t hold by itself.
Works for: Good for both work and play
Revived pompador
Jean-Marc: I personally love this hairdo. It’s very in right now. There are different ways of wearing – people either shave their hair on the sides or keep it shorter on the top, there are different varieties of the same hairstyle because it has just been around for so long, it has evolved in so many different ways! The best part about a pompadour is that it works on men with all kinds of faces – skinny, round etc. and you can adapt a pompadour to suit your face better i.e. you can make it skinnier, wider etc.
How to Maintain: A pompadour is a lot of work! You need wavy or straight hair. It doesn’t not work on curly hair that well. You have to blowdry it everytime, unless you have fabulous hair that just stays by itself (which is impossible!). Blowdry with your hands, use a little bit of hairspray and pomade and you’re good to go. But remember – never backcomb your hair!
