Fridges are practical. All they have to do is keep food as fresh as it can be, and they ought to have a TARDIS-like spaciousness to keep as much food as it could. The thought that goes into buying a fridge is a pragmatic as buying life insurance, regardless of the bells and whistles; above all else, as long as it bloody works.

Samsung’s line of refrigerators leads with its state-of-the-art features. There’s the Triple Cooling System, which oversees the temperature and humidity in three compartments and prevents the mixing of odours. Precise Cooling minimizes temperature fluctuations; a Metal Cooling plate that keeps the overall fridge cool. There’s even the FlexZone trait which is an independently controlled compartment that switches between normal and freezer modes.

And then Samsung goes on to up its game by giving form to its functional refrigerators. Enter the Bespoke Series; this line-up is modular, which allows you to mix and match components – like the 4-Door flex, Bottom Mount Freeze and 1-Door Flex – to fit into your kitchen space. Consumers can also choose colours like white, pink, navy, sky blue and grey to fit their layout to the look of your fridge. While this colour palette is eye-catching, Samsung misses out by not making full use of its canvas.

At the recent product unveiling several ‘creatives’ were tasked to add their spin to the Bespoke series. While there were the artists’ usual artwork emblazoned on the fridges’ exterior, Tan Zi Xi (aka MessyMsxi) thought out of the icebox and gave us an interactive exterior. She designed a maze in a forest setting where you can either trace your journey to the exit with your finger or use a set of magnets (made up to look like figures from a storybook – a child in a raincoat, a fox and a deer) to move around the maze.

It is a great concept that forces you to do more than just opening and closing the refrigerator doors. Unfortunately, that idea was only there as a showcase concept and is not available to buy, but what it does is present future possibilities for Samsung to take its Bespoke line to more imaginative heights.
