Looking to upgrade from the Apple Airpods? The Bang & Olufsen Beoplay EX are your answer.

I’ve always been a headphones snob. Since I was young, I’ve relentlessly searched for the best audio quality I could find, the best specs, the best comfort, meticulously researching before each purchase and visiting local stores to compare each tiny detail.

That is, of course, until Apple introduced the Airpods. While I initially scoffed at the product, once I landed a pair I found them never leaving my ears, as all my much nicer and more expensive headphones sat in a drawer. Perhaps this happened to you too.

While the comfort, stability and ease of use were the draws, Airpods to have numerous drawbacks. From the audio quality to basics such as the paltry microphone—especially noticeable on products such as the Airpods Pro—I was never entirely satisfied, but still unable to switch to anything else. I found myself hoping that one of the better, more audio-conscious brands could release something that would pull me away and do what they do, but better.

Thankfully, Bang & Olufsen finally has.

The Beoplay EX is the Airpods killer you’ve been waiting for, and after a few weeks of testing, I can confirm that, for the first time, a pair of wireless Bluetooth earbuds have caused me to leave my Airpods in a drawer somewhere.

Part of that is down to the stem-based shape, designed by Thomas Bentzen that keeps them both stylish and comfortable, with a much smaller housing of the earphone inside the ear that massively increases stability and basic wearability, making them easy to wear for hours without readjusting.

They’re also just straight-up good looking, with the Bang & Olufsen aesthetic on display throughout, with a mirror-like glass interface with a surrounding brushed aluminum ring. The hard part is choosing between the Black Anthracite, Gold Tone or Anthracite Oxygen finishes, complete with matching charging cases.

They also sound miles better than anything in-ear Apple has produced, and are easily among the best on the market in terms of sound, along with adaptive ANC and a fully waterproof design.

The new shape allowed the Danish brand to include a 9.2 mm speaker driver, the biggest ever for a true-wireless device from B&O, which upgrades the power of the audio, along for allowing all-day listening with 20 hours of total playtime including charging in the case and 6 hours with ANC turned on. Calls, also sound much better, with voice functionality and beamforming tech—along with three separate microphones.

Through trips across multiple continents over the last month, the Beoplay EX held strong, making it an easy recommendation as an essential travel companion for Summer 2022.
