Apple won’t include headphones or a charger with its iPhone 12; and that’s very good for the environment

The long-rumored leak that Apple will not include a wall charger or wired headphones in its next-generation iPhone 12 appear to be true.

MacRumours seemingly confirmed the news while going through the fine print of its latest iOS 14.2 Beta software. The software suggests that users will need to find their own headphones and charger, due to the lack of the word “supplied” when referring to both accessories.

At first glance, how stingy is Apple being here?

The iPhone 12 is touted as being the most expensive Apple smartphone in history, and they aren’t even providing headphones and a charger anymore?

That’s what most people are going to take from this, but there are some very large positives to Apple not including headphones and a socket charger in the box. Namely, for the environment.

Given the popularity of AirPods (especially among those who will happily drop a grand on Apple’s latest and greatest iPhone every year) and the prevalence of Lightning and USB-C connectors these days, it’s not totally out of this world to say that many iPhone 12 users will leave their headphones (definitely) and charger (maybe) in the box.

Considering that Apple has shipped an estimated 50 million iPhone 11 models so far this year, removing the headphones alone would significantly reduce the amount of electronic waste it contributes to.

Down that line, that would lead to reduced demand on electronic components (many of which are hard or near impossible to recycle), which would be a huge boon for the world. And given Apple’s new green credentials that seems like a step in the right direction for them.

That won’t stop many Apple fans from complaining about the rise in prices, however. But that’s less about Apple attempting to squeeze every last dollar out of its customers, and more the fact that 5G modems are rather expensive at the minute.

In other news, this iPhone 12 concept is exactly what we deserve from Apple. The new phone will see a major refresh this year, and the design is rumoured to include a fourth camera lens (similar to the Lidar 3D scanner that also appears on the 2020 iPad Pro) and includes a far smaller notch on the front. There has been recent talk that Apple might update the iPhone with a 120Hz display, however that is probably more speculation than grounded in fact.
