RIP to a real one: LG is shutting down its mobile phones business.
After years of producing some of the most underrated, interesting, well-made and sometimes downright weird phones on the market, LG has decided to shudder its mobile division.
LG has reportedly suffered huge losses in the billions, and as a result is throwing in the towel and moving its “mobile expertise to help further strengthen competitiveness in other business areas.”
If you still want an LG phone, such as this one we spoke about last year, you can, as the inventory will remain for sale for the time being, with devices still receiving support and updates. Those updates, however, won’t last forever, and LG is being vague about how long exactly they will support them, saying that the ‘period of time’ will vary depending on the region.
All and all, since LG said they won’t support the division past July, though phones should still be available for purchase after that, so keep that in mind when grabbing an LG phone perhaps on sale.
The latest projects from LG, Velvet and Wing, both never caught on, and dual screen phones didn’t entice consumers, who are increasingly entrenched in their Apple and Samsung phones, leaving the rest of the mobile landscape to fight it out in a merciless landscape.
The ones who survive are usually more affordable, such as OnePlus or Xiaomi, who produce phones in the LG realm of quality for a less premium price, making LG’s case a bit harder to make to consumers. LG tried to get into that space too—launching a more affordable 5G phone, the K92, to no great success.
