In a crowded smartphone market, does Honor’s new blower stand out?

Honor has just unwrapped a brand new flagship blower, dubbed the Honor 20 Pro.

That’s not to be confused with the Honor View 20, the Honor Pro or the Honor Pro Lite. Yes, it’s a tad confusing but bear with us and we’ll get you through it.

The ‘Pro’ in the title refers to the fact that this is Honor’s best-specced smartphone – and it’s a bit of a looker, too.

You get a glass rear panel made of three layers, and requires some complex manufacturing magic to produce. It’s what gives this smartphone its distinctive look, and one that seemingly changes depending on the type of light and the angle.

Flip the phone over and you get a 6.26-inch LCD screen, with a hole punch camera at the top. That’s right, there’s no notch here. The screen is colourful and punchy, and the rounded sides of the body mean there’s nothing to take your eyes away from that great screen. Would we rather it as an AMOLED screen? I mean, yes. But this one is plenty good enough for most people.

Besides the design, the camera here is the real star. That camera bump hides a whopping 48-megapixel lens, along with a 16-megapixel wide-angle, a 2-megapixel depth sensor as well as a 2-meg macro lens. The main sensor has both optical image stabilization as well as artificial intelligence stabilization, which means this guy can shoot great video and in low-light conditions.

The camera here is wonderfully versatile, thanks to some more clever artificial intelligence which can recognize the type of video your shooting and automatically optimize it.

The 20 Pro runs Android 9 Pie, with Honor’s own Magic UI on top. It’s good, but it’s not that great. Purists are going to want to clean out most of Honor’s already installed apps, or install another third-party skin. But that’s no different from the likes of Huawei or Samsung phones.

Of course, one thing this phone does do well is multitasking. It packs Honor’s own GPU Turbo technology, which makes gaming a real joy on this phone, and there’s more than enough going on under the hood to run multiple apps, videos, music and more at the same time.

All in all, the Honor 20 Pro is a pretty sweet smartphone. You get a class-leading design, a truly spectacular camera and a decent screen, all in a pint-sized and portable package.

Which is why we dig it.
