Tim Cook hints that Apple is working on something big

Apple CEO Tim Cook has heavily hinted that the tech company is gearing up to take on Netflix and Amazon, with its very own entertainment platform that will boast both “great talent” and “great original content”.

“We’re really happy to be working on something — but just not ready to talk about it in depth today,” Cook said while announcing Apple’s third-quarter earnings. To be fair, we’ve all been in the same position at some point, whether while anxiously deflecting a partner who wants to know where you’re taking them for an anniversary dinner, or when filibustering a lecturer expecting thoughts on Stalin’s agricultural policy.

Buzz about the mooted launch of a subscription service picked up in June, when Apple sorted out a multi-year deal with Oprah Winfrey. “We’re very excited to work with Oprah,” Cook said. “Her incomparable ability to connect with audiences around the world — there’s no match. I think we can do great original content together.”

Cook also referred to “two highly respected television executives” in Sony Pictures Television’s Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht, who have been brought in to oversee Apple’s worldwide video division. “I couldn’t be more excited about what’s going on there,” Cook said.”We’ve got great talent in the area that we’ve sourced from different places and feel really good about what we will eventually offer.”
