Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, has become one of the first in the region to get his hands on the Samsung Galaxy Fold.
Prince Hamdan shared an Instagram story of himself using the device and thanking both Samsung Mobile and Samsung Middle East.
It’s a huge boon to Samsung’s foldable smartphone (especially given the kicking it received by the press just days after its launch when Huawei launched an all-around better foldable device).
Prince Hamdan tends to be in Apple’s corner, however. He has visited numerous Apple stores in the UAE, including one-time meeting Apple CEO Tim Cook. Perhaps by sharing his first Android device with his 7.8-million fans on Instagram is Prince Hamdan’s first foray into Google’s ecosystem.
The South Korean firm now spends millions on influencer marketing, and indeed the Samsung Galaxy Fold has begun to appear on the Instagram/YouTube channels of hundreds of technology and lifestyle influencers around the world. We believe that Prince Hamdan is the first and only royal to receive one.
In brief, the Samsung Galaxy Fold boasts a 4.3-inch screen when in smartphone configuration, opening up to a 7.3-inch tablet. Both screens are pin-sharp AMOLEDs. When folded, the device measures 17-millimetres thick (in comparison, Apple’s iPhone XS is a paltry 7.7-millimetres) but when unfolded into tablet mode, it’s a slim 6.9-millimetres.
Samsung has said that the smartphone has been tested to last more than 200,000 folds (which works out to be around 100 folds per day). Which is handy.
Elsewhere, you get not one but six cameras. Why so many? Samsung has included three on every side of the device (meaning regardless of which mode you are in – smartphone or tablet – you’ll be able to snap until your heart’s content).
Would-be Galaxy Fold buyers will have to wait until next week – April 26 – to get their hands on a device. It is supposed to cost a truly eye-watering US$2,000 (AED7,500).
Unless you’re Prince Hamdan, that is. Then you get one for free.
