Samsung has upped the stakes in the foldable phone arena with its latest release, the Galaxy Z Flip 5. And its primary selling point comes in an element of design so simple, yet revolutionary (for Samsung): a hinge that fully closes without leaving a gap.

That might seem trivial, but it makes the Galaxy Z Flip 5 notably more pocket-friendly than its predecessors and most competitors. By eliminating the visible gap when the phone is shut, it drastically improves portability, making the Flip 5 potentially one of the most capable clamshell foldables on the market.

But the hinge isn’t the only improvement. The phone boasts increased power, thanks to its bespoke-tuned Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 CPU. This chip promises not only a boost in performance but also improved battery life, despite the battery size remaining consistent with the previous model.

You also get a much larger external display. The 3.4-inch Flex Window is a whopping 278% larger than the Z Flip 4’s 1.9-inch display. It’s customizable with widgets, photos, and colorful clock faces, providing more room for user personalization and accessibility.

The phone’s thickness has been reduced by 2mm from the previous model, and it’s now available in a range of pastel hues.

Despite the overall hype around the Galaxy Z Flip 5’s new features, Samsung appears to have played it safe in the camera department. The company decided to stick with the same 12MP sensors as the previous generation. While Samsung promises a year’s worth of image processing improvements and upgraded lenses to minimize light flaring, this lack of substantial hardware innovation might be a letdown for some.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is available for pre-order in a range of colors including Mint, Lavender, Graphite, and Cream. It is set to hit the market on the 11th of August.
