Huawei is a well-known brand in the tablet, smartphone and laptop industry. But it’s easy to forget that it also makes headphones and speakers.
The SoundX Bluetooth speaker, which was released in 2008, was a huge success. And now, the Huawei Sound Joy – and new portable-ish speaker – aims to capitalize on that success, with a device that offers plenty of joy for a reasonable price.
Huawei Sound Joy: Design
The Huawei Sound Joy is a more portable speaker than its predecessor, the Huawei Sound X. It comes with a strap and a tough exterior that can withstand bumps and bruises. The removable strap makes it easy to take out on hikes or to the beach, while the Huawei Sound Joy can double up as a speaker that you can place on your countertop at home.
The volume buttons are clearly designed for outdoor use. They take up a large portion of the speaker’s side, and feature bold, bold plus and minus signs, much like the UE Boom 3. The play/pause buttons, Bluetooth button, and USB-C port are located on the opposite side.
An LED ring at the top of the speaker reacts to music and displays the battery level. It is a lovely touch. It’s not essential, but it is charming.
Huawei Sound Joy: Sound Quality
The Huawei Sound Joy was co-engineered with Devialet in France. And it sounds great. It has a punchy bass and decently crisp mids. This device can cover all the needs of an average user.
It has a 26-hour battery that will last you for extended periods. You can also leave it unplugged in the bathroom to enjoy those singing sessions in the bath.
It’s possible to shake your Huawei Sound Joy to pair it with another Sound Joy speaker. You can also touch your Huawei smartphone to the top of the speaker, to pair it instantly, which is a nice touch.
Huawei Sound Joy: X-Factor
The LED ring is an interesting feature. On Android, you can customise it via the Huawei AI Life app (unfortunately, this cannot be done via iPhone). That means you cannot turn off reactive lighting to your music by default, only via the app – so Apple fans be ready for the light show.
Huawei Sound Joy: Verdict
The Huawei Sound Joy is a solid portable speaker, with enough oomph to fill the room with sound. It looks cool, can hold up to most adventures, and the LED ring is a nice touch.
