Huawei has been churning out great smartphones for ages, but was forever held back due to lack of Google App support. That’s no longer the case (see below on how to download the Big G’s apps officially).

What does that mean for Huawei’s current flagship the Mate50 Pro? Let’s find out

Huawei Mate50 Pro: Design

The Huawei Mate50 Pro boasts a sleek design that looks and feels premium. You get a posh-feeling glass back and metal frame, that comes together in a solid rectangular block. The 6.74-inch display makes it a bit larger than some other phones, but it’ still fits well in the hand.’s still pocketable. And there’s a fingerprint sensor is located on the side of the phone, which is a nice touch.

Huawei Mate50 Pro: Screen

That 6.74-inch screen is of the OLED flavour, with a resolution of 2616 x 1212 pixels. It’s bright and vibrant, equally suited to watching movies and playing games. The viewing angles are also good and the display is protected by Kunlun Glass (which is basically Huawei’s version of Gorilla Glass) so it will survive the odd bump and bruise.

Huawei Mate50 Pro: Camera

The Huawei Mate50 Pro rocks a triple rear camera setup that includes a 50MP main camera, a 64MP 3.5x telephoto camera, and a 13MP ultrawide camera. It takes excellent photos, with good details and accurate colours.

The real star here is Huawei’s Variable Aperture technology – that let the camera sensor adapt to shooting conditions on the fly. That means features like night mode and HDR, are pretty fantastic, making it great for low-light photography.

Huawei Mate50 Pro: Performance and Battery

The Huawei Mate50 Pro is powered by the Kirin 9000 processor and 8GB of RAM. That means it flies through multitasking applications and can manage video and games with ease.

The phone also has an impressive 4500mAh battery which can last up to two days on a single charge.

Huawei Mate50 Pro: Google you say?

Yes, you can now get Google apps on your Huawei device pretty seamlessly (unlike the old days, where you’d have to side-load them via an old Android phone).

You just need to head to the AppGallery, and search for the Google apps you want to download. Tap install and you’ll have to download a virtual installer, and then the likes of Google Maps, Gmail, YouTube, Docs and more will be available on the blower.

Huawei Mate50 Pro: The bad bits

The only real negative for the Huawei Mate50 Pro is the lack of wireless charging. Other than that, the phone has no major flaws.

Huawei Mate50 Pro: Verdict

The Huawei Mate50 Pro is a great device that offers a sleek design, excellent display, powerful performance, and great battery life. It’s a triple threat in the camera department, and that variable aperture makes it great for low-light photography.

It was already a great device; but the inclusion of Google Apps puts it right back up there with the best smartphones available today.
