The best reason to stop taking rubbish photos on your phone

Thanks to the camera on your phone life has never been more visually documented than it is today. And by life, we mean selfies, shots of somebody’s lunch and pictures of kittens.

The backlash to all this mobile madness had to happen eventually of course, and this summer sees a number of real cameras – you genuinely can’t make a telephone call on any of them – hit the market. These new additions not only look the part but also take a way better shot than those you shakily frame on your iPhone (yes, even after you’ve popped a silly filter over it).

Case in point: the retro shooter Fujifilm X100S. Perfect for street photography it’s small enough to stick in your pocket but with a 16.3 megapixel sensor it’s powerful enough to capture the real detail within your shot. The retro factor genuinely increases the appeal too – the silver model, in particular, reminiscent of the cameras used by war photographers in Vietnam.

Offering a stylish alternative to the massive ‘professional’ camera seemingly favoured at the moment (great if you’re a tourist looking to get mugged), the retro shooter might just have a chance of retaking some of the market. The photography fight back starts here.
