Does the world need another turbocharged, performance hatch? Mercedes certainly thinks so, if the AMG GLE 63 Coupé 4MATIC is anything to go by.
Its twin-turbo V8 generates 577hp and 561lb-ft of torque, while the all-wheel drive and a seven-speed automatic, hits 100kph in 3.9 seconds. Driving tech includes adaptive braking and collision prevention but you can also take it back to basics with the M button, allowing you to crank through the gears manually.
It also handles and stops amazingly well for a vehicle of its stature. Its enormous Continental ContiSportContact tyres allow it to stop from 113kph in just 159 feet while its 12.5-second 0.4km is faster than a Ford Mustang GT over a comparable distance.
Throw in the luxury, roomy interior and what this all adds up to is a car that takes the concept of a modern performance hatch that has already been done by its rivals, and steps it
up at least several notches. It’s a combination that will take some beating.
