The 17th round of this season’s Formula 1 commences in Japan this weekend with the 2022 Japanese Grand Prix. Max Verstappen continues to dominate in the tournament and is currently in the lead with a 104 point advantage over Charles Leclerc.

Verstappen has lost a little momentum as in last weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix, Red Bull’s Sergio Perez won the race and ended his winning streak as Verstappen had won the last 5 Grand Prix races in France, Hungary, Belgium, The Netherlands and Italy.

However, the last time the Formula 1 was in Japan, former Mercedes, now Alfa Romeo driver Valtteri Bottas won the race with Sebastian Vettel in second and Lewis Hamilton in third. Verstappen was unable to finish the race due to a collision with Leclerc.

Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher has won the most at the event with six wins at the Japanese Grand Prix.

Where is the Formula 1 race?

The teams meet up at the Suzuka International Racing Course this coming weekend, with the race on October 9 at 9am GST. So far, 17 Japanese drivers have competed in Formula 1. The best result for a local driver on home soil is third which was first recorded by Aguri Suzuki in 1990 and more recently by Kamui Kobayashi in 2012.

The track is known for its unique figure of 8 layout, which includes the fearsome 130R corner, has been host to many memorable F1 moments over the years, including several championship deciders.
