When will the Porsche Taycan finally hit roads?

For more than a year, Porsche has been teasing its newest model: the Taycan.

The car will be the first production model of the German automaker’s Mission E concept, effectively a supercar all-electric vehicle. The concept was unveiled back in 2015, but rumours that it would be legitimately manufactured have been rife for years. Just last year, a production model was announced.

Since then, Porsche has been steadily teasing the Taycan with cryptic videos and sketches every few months.

Here’s everything we know about the Taycan so far:

It looks pretty

On Tuesday Porsche revealed three new design sketches of the exterior of the Taycan. While two show the entire body from the front and back, the third is a close-up of a headlight and an air intake.

While sketches are just that, even if the manufacturer gets it to look half as good, the Taycan will be one pretty motor.

You can’t just buy it

Want to pick up a brand new Taycan? You won’t be able to simply walk in to a showroom.

Porsche has said those wishing to purchase a Taycan model must be invited, and has so far pre-selected 20,000 individuals on the prospective buyer list. Even then, those wishing to go-ahead and reserve a model of their own must make a down payment of US$2,500.

How do you pronounce the name?

In December, Porsche published a video on YouTube demonstrating how the name ‘Taycan’ is properly pronounced.

When can I drive it?

Porsche has said that legendary rally driver Walter Röhrl has been testing its speed and performance. One he’s satisfied, the model will go into full-blown production.

The first models should roll off the assembly line next year, with deliveries starting late 2020.
