Luxury car marquis Bentley has pledge every new vehicle will be a hybrid by 2023. The move comes as the company seeks to embrace greener technology before moving into fully electric vehicles.
The British company has said by 2023 all its vehicles will be offered in hybrid configuration. Its first all-electric vehicle is slated to launch in 2025. The move comes as swathes of automakers seek to embrace part- or fully-electric vehicles.
The first Bentley hybrid will be the Bentayga SUV, which is scheduled to hit roads later this year. It will be equipped with a powerful V6 engine along with an electric motor (bringing the total power output closer to that of a V8).
Following that, Bentley is due to release a plug-in hybrid version of the Flying Spur, and then the Continental GT and its convertible model.
While many other luxury carmakers have embraced fully-electric models, Bentley has said it is holding steady until the right technology arrives. It previously said that before it commits, it wants to see advances in both charging times and autonomous driving.
Those in the know say the company is waiting for solid state batteries, which would offer increased performance, range and diminished charging times. However, the first production vehicles to receive this type of batteries will not be on roads until 2021.
