As far as landmarks go, one million is a good one. While we’re not entirely sure what wedding anniversary that would be, we are sure that this week German car guru rolled its one millionth Porsche 911 off its conveyour belt.
Having started the production of the 911 more than 54 years ago, the car can now officially claim to being the true motoring icon that we always knew it was. But this isn’t just about the sheer number of vehicles sold, Porsche claims that more than two thirds of all 911s it has ever produced are still on the road – if true, it’s a remarkable feat of engineering quality.
Unfortunately, the actual millionth 911 – which will be painted same Irish Green paint job as the first 911 had – is not going to be up for sale. Instead Porsche AG will keep the car as a trophy to be driven around the world gracing its presence on the planet’s most famous driving roads, including the the Nurburgring, the Scottish highlands, Route 66 in the US and others.
Once this grand voyage is completed Porsche will retire 911 n.o. 1,000,000 to the Porsche Museum where it will become a historical piece for the German maker. A true landmark indeed.
