Mercedes’ the tenth generation of the business saloon makes a rather impressive statement of intent combining hi-tech-specs with luxury touches to ensure that all you have to do is enjoy driving its new series of E-class cars.

Technology
It’s bells and whistles ahoy in terms of safety, comfort and driver assistance. The new Drive Pilot package helps the vehicle monitor and maintain a safe following distance from the car in front at speeds up to 130kph. It uses surrounding sensors to actively correct the steering, even if the lane markings are unclear. Integrated into the Drive Pilot is a handy device called active ‘emergency stop assist’, which can apply the brakes if it detects the driver is no longer in control while on the move.

Integrated into the Drive Pilot is a handy device called active ‘emergency stop assist’, which can apply the brakes if it detects the driver is no longer in control while on the move.
The driving assistance package also contains active brake assist, which detects crossing traffic at junctions and if the driver fails to respond it will apply the brakes autonomously. Active break assist has a pedestrian detection function, so if the driver deliberately (or instinctively) has to perform an evasive manoeuvre, a calculated steering torque will be added to support the movement of the steering wheel. Despite what you’re thinking, this is for safety, not to assist drifting.
Performance
Each new E-Class model is equipped with a nine-speed automatic transmission gearbox, and includes multi-chamber air suspension. The cockpit’s dynamic selection switch means that you can choose between comfort, eco, sport and sport+ modes, allowing the driver’s personal preference to take over.
Design
The painstaking interior work has paid off, giving the E-class a boost of luxury. The car seats have a distinguished sporting look, and come equipped with massage options, multi-contour backrests and new active cushion. In a first for Mercedes, the steering wheel has touch-sensitive controls, creating a smartphone-like interface and reinforcing the motto: hands on the wheel, eyes on the road.
