Face value can be deceiving. In fact, the best way we can think of illustrating that point is with the Fidget Cube. While this small plastic cube essentially serves no purpose other than to let you occupy your restless fingers, we cannot overstate how much we want one – and it appears that we are not alone…
Originally set up as a Kickstarter campaign asking for a cool US$15,000 to help fund it, the internet responded in kind by raising over a mind-bending $5 million. That isn’t the end of it, as the campaign is still live until October, that number is expected to rise. Shipping of the cubes is to start in December 2016.
We know what you’re thinking: “five-mill for a freakin’ jumped-up stress ball! Madness!”, and you’d be right, but there’s a little more to it. Primarily aimed at those who incessantly fidget away with almost anything they have to hand, the makers explore how offering an outlet looks into the science of fidgeting and how offering an outlet can help raise productivity.
Made from aesthetically pleasing vinyl, and available in several colours (including Graphite, Midnight and Aqua), the toy offers five functions so there is enough variety to keep your hands constantly occupied:
***
The click – I’m sure we’ve all had a fair share of THAT guy in the office who constantly won’t stop clicking his pen, well chances are you’ll buy him on these cubes as it has an options for both silenced clicks and the regular click hopefully for folks who are luckily of enough to have their own office space.
The glide
If you’ve ever owned a Playstation, Xbox or ever hit up the local arcade you’ll probably know how addictive it is to spin on of those analog joysticks around and around. And well, if you don’t know you can join the club with this spinning joystick.
The flip switch: Like the clicker this one should also feel familiar, the flip switch has a pivot like a miniature see saw which can be fiddled fast for a clicking noise or faster for that oh-so-satisfying clicking sound. Just make sure you’re not the vicinity of anyone willing to chuck stationary at you.
The safe cracker
Ever been on the airport when your flight’s been delayed and you sit there in the lobby, flipping the number combinations on your luggage locks. Well now you can bring your fiddle game to the office. The face even has an added “trackerball” like spinning ball which you can spin infinitely with a flick of a finger. Oh and it clicks too because why not?
The worry cube
Fashioned from old worry stones, this indented face promises to relieve anxiety by rubbing the area with your thumb. Worry stones date back as far as Ancient Greece and Irish folklore claims rubbing a stone of a particular type of rock can bring good luck. We recommend you give a try, but don’t expect to win the lottery or anything.
The spin wheel
Sometimes you’re staring at a screen in what might be one of your not so productive days. You’ve still got that song you hate stuck in your head from your trip in the car. Well with the spin wheel you can unleash your inner DJ and spin the dial like you’re David Guetta with the world’s smallest turntable.
The Kickstarter campaign will end the October of this year and beginning shipping the cubes on December.
