It’s like the Bat cave…but more grown up

Gents, growing up is a hard pill to swallow. But now you’ve got your own place, and are making your own money it’s time to start taking a bit more pride in where you lay your head.

Now, we’re not saying that you have to go to IKEA every weekend and fill your house with products that sound like they are named after rejected Pixar films but, the truth of the matter is, that people just aren’t that interested in photo collages of your university buddies dressed up as umpah lumpahs.

As you get older you’re going to fine yourself spending more and more nights at home, so you may as well make it a place that looks the part and you feel comfortable in. Here are some good tips to remember when considering doing up your pad:

***

Spaces create spaces
Be creative with the positioning of your furniture. Unshackle your sofa by letting it sit in the middle of the room, that way it will create new walkways and let the rest of your furniture define the new room-within-a-room.

Work around
With the freedom of creativity that architects seem to be given here in the Gulf, you’ll likely be needing to do some quirky geometric manuveouring. Poufs, ottomans and upholstered benches are great ways to fill in awkward areas and help gather larger groups of people in one place.

Dim and dimmer
We don’t listen to our music on one volume, so why should we accept one level of light? Adding dimmers to your light switches allows you to set the mood for dinner, watching late night films or when you need to crank it up to be productive.

Self-reflection
The strategic placing of mirrors can instantly increase the ambient light in your house. Placing in near or opposite a window doubles the amount of perceived light. A good tip to remember is that oversized reflective surfaces help to open up small rooms.

Go green
Just because you have plants around, doesn’t make you – whisper it – middle aged. In fact having plants in your man-pad can work excellently as a centrepiece. Not only do they add texture and dimension to your space, but they also provide organic energy. Just make sure you keep an eye on them, you savage.
