Last night, the open beta for MultiVersus became available for everyone to download and play as diverse selection of Warner bros characters such as Bugs Bunny, Batman, Arya Stark from Game of Thrones, and NBA star Lebron James in this free-to play multiplayer fighting game.

The game is available on PS5. PS4, Xbox Series X/S. Xbox One and PC (sorry Switch users).

The game is similar to Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros in the sense that multiple characters  fight on various stages with platforms themed on Warner Bros IP’s such as DC, Steven Universe, Scooby Doo, Adventure Time and so on. Each character has their own set of combos and special moves designed for their specific playstyle.

How to download and play

After downloading MultiVersus on whichever platform they own, players will have to create a WB Games account. They will then be sent a code to their email with a verification code they must enter on the same website. After this, the player will be able to access the main menu of the game.

Being an open beta, the game is still being developed but the good news is that any progress players make in the open beta will be carried over into the full version of the game which is expected to officially launch sometime in 2023, but no exact date has been given yet.

Unlock Wonder Woman for free

At the main menu,  players will be given the choice to play the tutorial where you’ll play as Shaggy to learn the game’s controls and eventually test your might against Wonder Woman.

Shaggy v Wonder Woman. That’s a matchup nobody ever thought they’d see.

Let’s be honest, who skips a tutorial for an online game and jumps into a match right away? That’s just asking for a score of 1 kill and 10 deaths. Even if you’re great at figuring out controls via button mashing, you may as well complete the tutorial to unlock Wonder Woman for free. There are also advanced tutorials on dodging, cooldowns and other game mechanics.

All MultiVersus fighters

multiversus character roster

At the moment, there are 17 fighters for players to choose from in Multiversus and each are equipped with their own specific play-style such as Tank, Bruiser and Mage. They also come with alternate appearance options which can be unlocked.

  • Shaggy
  • Wonder Woman (After tutorial completion)
  • Batman
  • Superman
  • Taz
  • Iron Giant
  • Garnet
  • Steven Universe
  • Jake (Adventure Time)
  • Reindog (an original character)
  • Finn (Adventure Time)
  • Velma
  • Arya Stark
  • Bugs Bunny
  • Harley Quinn
  • Tom & Jerry (as one character)
  • Lebron James
  • Rick & Morty (just announced)

Most of these characters require players to play the game in order to level up and unlock them, so the next question is, who can you play from the get go?

MultiVersus features a fighter rotation system where a group of fighters are free for everyone to play for that current week. Right now, players can play as Superman, Garnet, Reindog and Finn. If the character you want to play as shows a padlock symbol, then you’ll need to play a few games to work towards unlocking them. As players level up, they’ll be able to train perks to make their favourite character more powerful.

Gamers can expect more characters to be added later as MultiVersus will be able to pull characters from various Warner Bros franchises such as Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Lord of The Rings and so on. Godzilla or King Kong could even become playable characters since Warner Bros co-own the MonsterVerse with Legendary Pictures.

Game modes and maps

Players can choose to to play either 1v1, 2v2, or free-for-all against other online players on the open betas seven available Warner Bros themed maps which are the Batcave, Sky Arena, Scooby’s Haunted Mansion, Tree Fort as well as Trophy’s E.D.G.E 1 and 2 which are two original maps created by the games developer, Player First Games.

Preseason Battle pass

Similar to other games such as Fortnite, Apex Legends and Fall Guys, MultiVersus has its own battle pass right now which is smaller than what players will get when in later seasons when the full game is released. Like many other games featuring a battle pass, it’s likely that the full MultiVersus battle pass in later seasons will consist of 100 tiers of items.

By playing the game and levelling up, players will unlock various rewards such as profile icons, gold, xp boosts, and badges. There are extra items such as a Shaggy skin variant, a Wonder Woman taunt to mock enemy players and profile banners such as Batmans bat-signal which are exclusive to players who choose to purchase the premium version of the battle pass for 300 gleamium, the in-game currency.

The smallest bundle available is 450 gleamium for $4.99. MultiVersus also features an item shop full of cosmetics and other items where players can spend their gleamium.
