No surprises here – internet usage has surged around the world, as millions self-isolate and stay at home.
While technology firms like Netflix and YouTube have downgraded some of their services (such as resolution) to handle the demand, game networks can’t really do that as easily.
Amidst many complaints by gamers around the world, Microsoft and Sony have assured players that they are watching the situation very closely.
Xbox product services vice president Dave McCarthy says that the company is “actively monitoring usage and making temporary adjustments as needed to ensure the smoothest possible experience for our gamers.”
Meanwhile, Sony’s CEO Jim Ryan said PlayStation was putting in place processes that would “address internet stability concerns”. However, he did also admit that players “may experience somewhat slower or delayed game downloads but will still enjoy robust gameplay”.
The gaming has been one of a few industries that has done well due to the coronavirus epidemic. US media network Verizon recently reported that it saw gaming network time grow 75 per cent since the beginning of February.
