Like a katana blade to the head, Samurai Jack is back.
The cartoon show returned for a fifth and final season in 2017 (although, the original show played on Cartoon Network throughout the 2000s), but the new game – Battle Through Time – is expected to open a new saga in the Samurai Jack story.
Announced for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, the game is set prior to Jack’s final showdown with time-portalling demon Aku.
The original show was created by celebrated creator Genndy Tartakovsky, who also created Dexter’s Laboratory. He since went on to direct Star Wars: Clone Wars, and the Hotel Transylvania movie.
The game is being developed with help from Japanese studio Soleil, which also helped produce Switch’s Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes. Despite its size, Soleil’s most senior staff have all worked on the likes of Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive games.
Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time was announced ahead of the video game convention PAX East 2020, in Seattle.
The expo itself has been hit by more than a few withdrawals, from some of the world’s biggest game companies due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Electronic Arts, Capcom, CD Projekt Red, Square Enix and PlayStation all cancelled planned attendances.
