Nintendo is on fire this year

It’s been a few months since we totally lost our minds at Nintendo’s E3 line-up, the family-friendly gaming company has returned with fresh announcements for its Direct. Safe to say there’s a lot to be excited about. 

Nintendo Directs are an in-house showcase by the company to show off all the latest projects its working on and provide information updates for projects we’re already hotly anticipating. 

There was a lot of Nintendo goodness squeezed into the 38 minute and change presentation, though we’ve got together a handful of our favourite announcements and updates: 

Overwatch is coming to the Switch 

Coming on October 15, Overwatch will finally make its way onto Nintendo’s flagship console. The port will come with a deal offering 14 character skins and a three-month subscription to Nintendo’s online services. Players will need this service to play any of Overwatch’s modes. 

A nifty thing about the announcement is that players will be able to play Overwatch on the go thanks to the Switch’s inherent portability. You’d need a steady Wi-Fi connection but in this day and age it’s hardly tricky to find some Wi-Fi to latch onto. 

Overwatch is a team-based multiplayer shooter with fun graphics, crazy mechanics, characters, and weapons. It’s one of the most popular games in the world, though Nintendo die-hards have had to wait three years for this moment. 

Banjo & Kazooie and Terry Bogard in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 

As of today (September 05), Banjo & Kazooie are finally playable characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as part of the game’s growing list of DLC fighters. The duo starred in eponymous games hailing from a company called Rare, making up a trilogy of puzzling adventure games. 

Also announced was an upcoming challenger named Terry Bogard. Bogard hails from the classic SNK fighting franchise called Fatal Fury and makes up the fourth character in Nintendo’s first Fighter Pass for Smash Bros. It was also announced he will come with a new stage and song in the game. The character’s style is yet unknown, however since he is from a fighting game, his play style may be similar to that of Smash Bros’ Street Fighter characters Ryu and Ken. 

Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) titles coming to Switch Online 

The Switch has a feature as part of its online service where users can play a library of classic Nintendo games. Nintendo announced that games from the SNES will now be added. 

The games include the following: 

Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Stunt Race FX (Available for the first time since its original Super NES release!), Kirby’s Dream Land 3, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, Star Fox, F-ZERO, Pilotwings, Kirby’s Dream Course, BRAWL BROTHERS, Breath of Fire, Demon’s Crest, Joe & Mac 2: Lost in the Tropics, SUPER E.D.F. EARTH DEFENSE FORCE, Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts, Super Puyo Puyo 2 (Available for the first time in the U.S.!), Super Soccer (Available for the first time since its original Super NES release!), Super Tennis (Available for the first time since its original Super NES release!)

All of these Super NES games can be played with online functionality on Nintendo Switch Online, including multiplayer gameplay in select games and voice chat via the Nintendo Switch Online app. 

The vintage game drop also coincided with the drop of the SNES controller for Switch. 

Pokémon Sword / Shield details 

Launching exclusively on Switch on November 15, we got some extra details on Pokémon’s newest two main games. Players got a look at two new Pokémon to enter the game, Polteageist and Cramorant. 

Polteageist is a ghost-type Pokémon, and makes a home for itself by hiding among dishes at hotels and restaurants. Its body is made of tea, and it may even let a trusting Trainer have a taste of its tea.

The flying- and water-type Pokémon Cramorant will swallow absolutely anything that looks hearty enough. It has an exclusive ability called Gulp Missile. While using Surf or Dive in battle, it will counter when attacked.

New game modes were also shown off such as Pokémon Camp where you can play with your Pokémon, an in-depth character customisation system and even a curry cooking mode to feed your Pokémon.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons details 

The 2020 release is fast approaching but in the mean time we’ve been given time. Players got a look at the Deserted Island Getaway Package by Nook Inc, showing life on a deserted island. The clip showed new mechanics to the franchise such as an in-depth craft building system and foraging system. It looked a bit Minecraft-y if you ask us. 

Animal Crossing is a long-standing franchise that allows players to live and thrive in a virtual town. Anything from collecting bugs and fossils, to creating flower displays and making sure you don’t annoy your fellow residents. The game is heading in a new direction for 2020, with a greater focus on sustainability and self-sufficiency.
