Though the rest of society may be in complete shambles, the behemoth pop culture mechanism that is video gaming looks to be charging full steam ahead. Like Comic Con, E3 showcases many of the most important upcoming titles for the industry, with studios from Microsoft to EA to Bethesda taking to the stage to introduce what comes next for their biggest franchises.
This year’s E3 has been host to a ton of welcome surprises already—did you catch Keanu Reeves in the Cyberpunk 2077 trailer?—and we’re stoked to see all the new titles that are set to be teased throughout the week ahead. Halo Infinite
Release date: Holiday 2020
We got a short cinematic trailer showing Master Chief following the loss at the end of Halo 4. While no gameplay or other significant details have been released, it was announced we’ll see Halo Infinite with the release of Xbox’s new Project Scarlett console in the holiday season of 2020. This game looks badass.
Flight Simulator
Release Date: TBD
Though this may not appeal to the average player, Microsoft’s Flight Simulator is one of the most beloved and well-known games of all time, with a huge fan base that spans several generations. Time will tell if this return for the franchise will still make sense in today’s video game ecosystem.
Cyberpunk 2077
Release date: April 16, 2020
Keanu. Reeves. Keanu-fricking-Reeves. News about this game has been floating around for a while now, but we had no idea Mr. John Wick was going to show up in this open world, neo noir title. Cyberpunk 2077 got our attention in a big way.
Battletoads
Release date: TBD
HELL YEA. Battletoads is back. This remaster—featuring classic three-player couch co-op, smooth gameplay, a rad art style, and some more details—is a game a lot of us retro lovers have been waiting for. While a release date is unknown, we know Battletoads will be available on Xbox Game Pass at its release.
Blair Witch
Release date: August 30
During Microsoft’s ID showcase for upcoming indie games, a new Blair Witch Project game showed up. Not many details are known yet, but it looks fucking scary. A great visual style and some adrenaline-pumping gameplay was shown off to get us excited for this horror classic.
Gears 5
Release date: September 10, 2019
To no one’s surprise, the latest installment of Gears of War showed up during Microsoft’s press conference with a truck-ton of info, including new online modes, a touched-up art style, some gameplay, battle royale mode (of course), and a Terminator collab that looks awesome. There will be a lot of aggressive, badass fun to be had when Gears 5 releases in September.
Doom Eternal
Release date: November 22, 2019
Bethesda showed off a bunch of new content for its follow-up to Doom 2016 at E3 this year, and the sequel looks very much in line with the electrifying vision for the franchise that we saw in the most recent title a few years ago. We’re ready to give the demons on Mars pure hell.
Wolfenstein: Youngblood
Release date: July 26, 2019
The woman-led Wolfenstein sequel is set to take flight on July 26, and fans of the Nazi-ravaging series are stoked. The last one caught the attention of white supremacists for being too “political,” but it doesn’t look like the developers have backed off at all on that front, giving us a game that takes place in an alternate 1980s Paris where the Third Reich is still in control.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
Release date: November 15, 2019
We were treated to a lot of Fallen Order promotional material and trailer content on the road to E3, but EA’s showcase finally unleashed a ton of gameplay footage for its highly anticipated new Star Wars title. While EA has failed us with its disappointing Star Wars games before, Fallen Order still looks very, very good. Please be good.
FIFA 20
Release date: September 27, 2019
While it’s no surprise that FIFA is coming back this year, the new game is looking slick and fresh as ever. EA showed off FIFA’s new VOLTA football mode, which gives voice to the broad and colorful world of street soccer.
Final Fantasy VII Remake
Release date: March 3, 2020
This game is one that few of us thought we’d see in the next decade. The Final Fantasy VII remake got a new trailer at the Final Fantasy orchestra concert on Saturday with a confirmed release date for next March. Square Enix likes to delay games, so it very well could drop later, but a 2020 release date seems certain.
Kingdom Hearts III Re:Mind DLC
Release date: Winter 2019
Kingdom Hearts III’s elusive paid DLC chapter got a trailer at the start of the Kingdom Hearts Orchestra world tour, featuring new playable characters, some wacky story lines, and a winter release date.
