Amazing shots from the ‘Wildlife Photographer of the Year’ Awards 2016

This year’s theme was ‘society’s interactions with the natural world.’

“Road to destruction” – 2015 brought drought and extensive forest fires to Borneo’s rainforest, causing orangutan habitats to be destroyed along with more than 21,000sqkm of forest.

“End of the line” – Orphanes by the forest fires, young orangutan are taken to a rescue centre in Borneo

“Star Player” (Impression Category) – A young sea lion

“Snapper Party” (Underwater Category) – Thousands of spotted snappers gather around Palau in the western Pacific Ocean.

“Requiem for an owl” (Black and White Category) – A nighttime shot of a Eurasian pygmy owl taken in Sweden. They are Europe’s smallest owls at just seven inches tall.

“The Alley Cat” (Urban Category) – A leopard slips through an alleyway that borders on a national park in Mumbai.

“Wind Composition” (Plants and Fungi Category) – Showers of pollen are released from these hazel tree flowers with each gust of wind

“Eviction Attempt” (Bird Category) – An Indian rose-ringed parakeet attempts to pull a Bengal monitor lizard from its nest.

“The Pangolin Pit” (Wildlife Photojournalist Award) – Paul Hilton’s image of four thousand defrosting pangolins from one of the largest seizures of the animals on record. They were to be shipped to China and Vietnam for the exotic-meat trade or for traditional medicine use.

“The Moon and the Crow” (Winner Young Photographer) – A silhouette of a crow taken at dusk in London’s Valentines Park
