Everyone loves tacos.
Or at least I think everyone loves tacos, as I’ve never met a man or woman (or dog even) that doesn’t enjoy the taste of a rolled-up warm tortilla filled with deliciousness. Be they corn or made of wheat; fish tacos, beef tacos or served with simple scoop of chilli con carne as a filling, let’s all agree that tacos are pretty damn good.
With that fact established, a few of us in the office have made it our business to eat, rank and rate some of the finest taco establishments in Dubai. And next on that list is a little-known taco shop in Jumeirah Lakes Towers.
Maiz Tacos Dubai: what’s the vibe?
Maiz Tacos started as a humble taco truck by a husband and wife team but has since expanded into the proper restaurant game. That’s a very good thing.
The JLT location sits underneath Daiken Ramen, features seven or eight tables (room enough for around 40-people) and comes with an array of taco-based tattery on the walls – stuff like “I dreamed of tacos and now I am eating tacos”. It’s all very kitsch.
The real star is the semi-open dining room, that lets punters get a glimpse (and a waft) of the kitchen beyond.
Maiz Tacos Dubai: how’s the food?
The tacos at Maiz are indeed very good and considering they put the word in their restaurant’s name, indeed they should be.
As its title suggests, these are proper corn tortillas which – depending on your particular taste – might put a few people off. But not us. Standouts include Carne Asada, which are served with a hefty dose of onions and salsa, as well as the seven-hour slow-cooked beef ‘El Jefe’.
Everything is made 100 per cent fresh every morning here, and that elevates the food far beyond your traditional tex-mex’d taco outlet. There’s also more than a few veggie and vegan options – and they too are rather good – which will please the dietary-challenged.
Yes, there are things like quesadillas, burritos and bowls on the menu – but the place isn’t called ‘Maiz Burritos‘, for a reason.
If you go there, eat the tacos. Enough said.*

It’s hard to mess up a taco, but it’s also a challenge to create an amazing one. Fortunately, Maiz Tacos gets it right. These tacos are delicious.

*Having said that, the Flautas – which are rolled crispy flour shell tortillas filled with roasted chicken and slathered in a spicy dressing – are also very good. But as they are essentially just a deep-fried taco, that statement still stands.
