The final long weekend of 2024 is approaching us here in The Middle East, taking shape in the form of Eid Al Etihad, extending the weekend an extra two days (at least for most of us) on December 2 and 3.
If you’re staying in Dubai for the long break, we’ve included some of our favourite restaurants of the season, but if you’re planning on traveling to the most romantically Christmas-heavy city on earth – London – we’ve got your taste buds covered there too.
Armani/Hashi – Sushi
Assuming the weather permits (which means now until, like, February), you are literally dining underneath the tallest building in the world, feasting on some of the best sushi you’ll ever have in your life (Gault&Millau winning, duh). With the Armani hotel in your rearview, you have the world famous Dubai fountain spouting choreographed wonder in front of you all night. If you’re visiting Dubai for the first time, this should be high on the list.

Studio Frantzén – French/Asian/Scandinavian
Multi-award winning chef, Björn Frantzén, is riding high on the success of his Stockholm based original which was recently awarded best restaurant in the world, and he graciously decided to set up shop inside Atlantis The Palm to give the people of Dubai a taste of his Nordic excellence. For the average person, Swedish food may be synonymous with the meatballs you get at IKEA, and although there’s nothing wrong with eating food at the hardware store, Björn’s geographical smorgasbord is a true explosion of innovation in your mouth. And yes, they have an entire room dedicated to Swedish candy.

Strawfire – Japanese
Having just recently opened in the ultra luxury Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi, Strawfire fires on every cylinder when galvanizing the senses. Although you’ll have a bit of a drive in front of you if you’re coming from Dubai, why not make a splash out of it over the holidays and book a room at the palace? You won’t regret it.

Atmosphere – Modern French
If you eat here, you are instantly part of a relatively humble number of Guinness world record holders since you have now eaten inside the tallest restaurant in the world. Located inside the Burj Khalifa, Atmosphere boasts an incredible menu, the kitchen helmed by newly appointed head chef, Yannis Sgard, and I don’t think any sane person will ever get over how truly staggering that view is. One to cross off the bucket list, to say the least.

Bar Des Prés – French/Japanese
Following its titanic success in both Paris and London, the Franco-East Asian restaurant, helmed by celebrated Chef Cyril Lignac, is finally coming to Dubai’s ICD Brookfield Place on December 7, 2024 (okay, it’s technically after Eid, but it’s just in time for the holidays). Bonus points for being located in the coolest part of the city.

Shanghai ME – Pan Asian
The iconic local culinary gem was so popular that it quickly expanded to Doha and London (and Monaco in 2025), and next week it celebrates its 5 year anniversary on December 5, 2024. Located in the DIFC and helmed by the legendary Chef Izu, Shanghai ME features live music, a booming atmosphere, an innovative drinks menu, and some of the best Asian cuisine this side of the gulf.

Armani/Ristorante – Italian
Located inside the famous Armani hotel, the multi-award winning Italian eat is arguably the closest you’ll get to dining in Italy, considering that you’re also seated inside another staple of Italian heritage. A serene contrast from many bombastic Dubai eateries, the interior is calm, white walled and luxuriously tranquil.

La Niña – Latin
You come for the food, you stay for the bullfighting. Okay, technically there’s no bullfighting, but you do get watch a Spanish matador dance happen literally in front of you (I really mean literally, as this dude will get up on the table and dance in front of you – it’s wild), and the food will make you want to read The Sun Also Rises by Hemingway as soon as you leave.

Alaya – Mediterranean
Another DIFC darling, Alaya is the perfect mix of, “Wow, this doesn’t even feel like I’m in Dubai,” and, “This place is pretty wild…only in Dubai!” It’s Avant Garde in the best possible way, and when you’re there, ask for extra white truffles…it’s worth it.

The Guild – European Brasserie
DIFC again? Look, just go there and you’ll understand why so many joints in this place make the list. It’s multi award winning, and caters to every foreigner currently waving the expat flag in Dubai, such as Thanksgiving, Sunday Roasts, and much more. And for some after hours cosmetology, the Aviary Bar will tick every box.

Prime52 – Steakhouse
Opening this week, Prime52 is an upscale steakhouse with a carnivorous menu, open kitchen, and panoramic views of Dubai Marina. Dubai has many a terrific steakhouse, but a post-dinner walk around the yachts of the marina adds that little extra oomph that separates 52 from the rest.

Narnia – Asian
Despite the name, you probably won’t find Turkish delight on the menu, nor is the head chef a talking lion. However, there are a handful of Chinese dragons flying around, so perhaps that’s a homage to the fantastical? I digress. Located inside the Loona in Downtown Dubai, the innovative Pan-Asian will make you feel like your taste buds are in Narnia. Yes, please.

Bâoli – French/Asian
Ever been to Cannes, specifically, during the film festival? If the answer is yes, you’ll know how hard it is to get into Bâoli if your name isn’t Leonardo DiCaprio, and the hottest place in the south of Europe has now opened its doors in Dubai. Caviar, champagne, and a long list of verified blue checks on Instagram awaits at this notoriously palatial, celebrity filled beach club/restaurant.

Maison De La Plage – French
Forgive me ahead of time for ruining the secret, but us here at Esquire take pride in being the first to know about something, case in point being that Maison De La Plage will soon open the first ever speakeasy in Dubai. Aptly titled La Sombra, which translated to ‘the shadow,’ the soon-to-be-edgiest-den-in-the-city is the place to be for live music, an African inspired menu, and after-hours-spontaneity. And if you want the beach club for which it’s universally known, just go upstairs, get some sunscreen, and enjoy the food, the pool, and the vibes.

London
Scott’s – Seafood
Opened in 1851, this Mayfair favourite of everyone from Mick Jagger to Rod Stewart, was described as “the hub of West London” back in 1914, and we’re not sure that title has been bestowed to anyone else over the last 100 years. Author and creator of James Bond, Ian Fleming, frequented this culinary staple during the war, and if you walk past its outdoor terrace today you’d be surprised if you didn’t see at least one A-lister sipping a champagne flute with wraparound sunglasses. But instead of being a gawking pedestrian, simply join them inside. You’ll feel cooler already.

Barbary – South European/African
Restaurant was so nice they had to open it twice. Following the wildly successful Neal’s Yard location, Barbary recently opened up its doors in Notting Hill, and according to those in the area, there’s been a recurring line of people around the block waiting to get a taste of this W2 wonder. Portobello Road and Hyde Park are but a five minute walk away.

Dovetale – European Classics
Led by multi-award winning celebrity chef, Tom Sellers, Dovetale is the embodiment of luxury comfort food in a way that you won’t find anywhere else than London. Go for their brunch and get the pancakes. Go for a drink by yourself before a date. Or take the whole family for Christmas. No matter what, you’re winning. And whoever you take will love you.

Bacchanalia – Greek/Mediterranean
For seekers of the sublime who find themselves perusing the dimly lit corridors of uncertainty, Bacchanalia feels like you’ve been transported to Mt. Olympus and you’re about to dine with Zeus and Poseidon. Its interior is truly extraordinary, and almost has to be seen to be believed. The fact that the food is great just adds to the party. Bonus points if you wear a toga (kidding, you probably won’t be let in if you do that).

Park Corner Brasserie – Classic English
If you want a good, inherently British Sunday roast or a fancy take on fish ‘n chips right beside Hyde Park, this may be the best option in all of London. Right in the middle of Mayfair, you have two options surrounding you: melt into the touristic excitement of Oxford Street, or take refuge in the sweeping greens of the best, most famous park in all of Europe (sorry, not sorry).

The Wolseley – Classic English
Close your eyes and picture this: You’re eating inside the most inherently fabulous British restaurant imaginable. The doormen don top hats and bow as your enter. The cavernous art deco interior looks as if it were ripped straight from a Jane Austen novel, yet somehow much more romantic. Open your eyes: you’re at The Wolseley, aren’t you? Having just passed its 100th anniversary, there’s a reason this staple of London continues to be one of the most in-demand haunts in the city. Go for the afternoon tea or for a full dinner. And if time permits, get there a bit early and have one of their signature cocktails in the bar. Bonus points if you’re wearing a jacket with coattails.

Hotel Café Royal – Classic English
Located within eyesight from the world famous Piccadilly Circus on Regent Street, this is the inarguably the most Christmas-y area of London, a decorated area you’ve undoubtedly seen on your Instagram feed some time this, or any, holiday season. Built in 1865, this historic, 5-star landmark is not only one of the most luxurious hotels in the country, but boasts some of the most varied culinary magic in all of London. Their festive afternoon tea is the stuff of legend, so don’t miss it.

Aqua Shard – Modern British
Panoramic views and classic British cuisine on the 31st floor of the architectural landmark that is The Shard. The view alone is enough of a reason for you to run, not walk, to get a reservation, but the fact that the menu is equally as impressive as its location sets it apart from any and all high-rise competition. And yes, of course they also have afternoon tea; and yes, it’s terrific.

Shiro – Japanese
The bustling new outdoor shopping centre in the famous Liverpool Street section of East London is home to one of the coolest sushi joints in the city. And considering the quality and location, it’s also reasonably priced. With things like ‘sushi brunch’ and an innovative desert menu, if you want sushi with a London twist, then go go go to Shiro.

Azzurra – Italian
With a name like Azzurra, you know whatever is about to happen, it’ll probably be pretty wild, if not memorable. Bringing the spirit of the Amalfi coast to (arguably) the most palatial section of London – Chelsea – their viral Tiramisu and selection of oysters is the closest you’ll feel to Dickie Greenleaf in London, not to mention their Jazz nights hosted every Thursday. Tanti baci.

LUCi – Italian
Covent Garden is close enough to central London to be touristy, yet far enough away to be its own pocket of culture, infused by the neighbouring spirit of The West End. If you have tickets to see any shows during the holidays, i.e., The Nutcracker, then the only viable choice for a post theatre meal is LUCi. Classic Italian cuisine? Yes. But do they also have afternoon tea?…what do you think?

STK – Steakhouse
For the carnivore in you, this steakhouse/bar is situated right on the Strand with views of the Thames river, and is just as romantic and Christmas-y as it is after hours bad boy boogie. If you want to look at something beautiful in addition to the shimmering skyline, you might find yourself falling in love with more than just the food. And if you’re celebrating New Year’s Eve in the big smoke, you should book a table here now. But if the tourist in you just really wants to know what a good Sunday roast tastes like – bingo.

Gaia – Greek Mediterranean
Again, situated in arguably the most perfect holiday spot in London, Gaia is far enough removed from the boisterous bustle of Regent Street and Piccadilly Circus, yet right across the street from The Wolseley, should you want to mix the menus a bit. But regardless, Gaia’s global celebrity has resulted in locations everywhere from Doha and Dubai to Miami and Monaco – truffles, oysters and olive oil everywhere, and we couldn’t think of anything better. And if you want some after hours turbulence, go downstairs to NYX, which is quite hard to get into, but if you see the fabulous demographic, you’ll understand why.

Hutong – Chinese
Again, another staple that should prove familiar to those who’ve ever spent five minutes in the DIFC, but their modern Chinese menu will break your heart with its perfection when you realise that you’ll never be able to ‘order a Chinese’ from anywhere else ever again. Located inside the Shard by London Bridge, you have some of the best pubs, bars and street markets in the area, and by my preference, it’s one of my pockets of London.

Aqua Nueva – Spanish
There’s a reason Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona ends with the wistful sulk of leaving Spain. This Spanish haunts bustles with that Southern European energy with croquettes, cocktails and paella to match. And yes, they also turn it up to 11 on their occasional on-sight club nights, especially on New Year’s.

Claridge’s – Classical English
This 200+ year old landmark is one of the most recognisable in all of London, and in all honesty, you don’t even have to eat at the restaurant, just go in the lobby and buy a cup of coffee and enjoy basking in the inimitable Englishness for which the city and hotel are so famous. Still though, you should definitely eat there, as its art deco interior, oceanic wine list, and culinary English excellence is an experience you’ll be telling your grandkids about. And if you want to spot a celebrity around the holidays, this hotel, and section of London, is the place. Nobody does Christmas better than these guys.

The Mark Restaurant by Jean Georges
Yes, this is technically New York, USA, which excludes it from the London/Dubai list, but so what? Titled “New York’s most boldly lavish hotel,” The Mark Restaurant hits different when you’ve just gotten off a red eye flight and demand the best of what the city has to offer. With an accompanying “The Mark Bar” and an endless list of holiday festivities, this Manhattan haunt is a must if you visit The Big Apple, especially during Christmas.
