They supposedly have the same texture as traditional steaks

Yes, you heard that right. Steaks are now being printed as Spanish startup Novameat demonstrated how its 3D technology manufactures vegetarian steaks at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Tuesday.

Novameat had developed the technology back in 2018 which tests recipes and introduces ingredients through capsule’s and is a much cheaper method than mass-producing according to Novameat Business Development Manager Alexandre Campos.

“(We seek to) replace animal meat for something that is better for the planet, ourselves and animals” he stated.

According to Campos, the meat could be produced on a larger scale and in bigger machines not using 3D technology, with a possibility of manufacturing up to 500KG of ‘fake’ meat per hour.

We already have capsule coffee machines but what if this technology was commercialised so that we could have capsule steak machines in our homes? Perhaps would get steak capsules with different seasonings similar to how coffee capsules come in a variety of flavours.

After tasting a sample of the 3-D printed steak at the Mobile World Congress Event, Ferran Gregori commented that “It didn’t have the feeling of a traditional steak but I was positively surprised because I did not expect that the texture would be so well received.”

The goal of Novameat is to recreate the muscle fibres of animal meat but using 100 percent plant-based ingredients to do so.

Speaking to Reuters, Campos is hoping to sell its printed steaks directly to consumers, restaurants and other businesses that are keen to produce plant-based meat as believes that there will be exponential growth in the plant-based industry in years to come.
