The journey of The Balvenie Fifty Collection begins with the First Edition, a single malt whisky that has been aged for 50 years in a European oak refill cask, originally filled in 1973. With just 125 bottles released annually over three years, this limited-edition whisky offers connoisseurs a rare taste of The Balvenie’s legacy. The collection will expand with a Second Edition in 2025, showcasing an American oak barrel filled in 1974, which will be married with the earlier cask. The final release, due in 2026, will complete this trilogy of expertly crafted expressions.
Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie, entrusted with carrying on the brand’s rich tradition, has overseen the meticulous creation of this series. “Each release represents the extraordinary commitment that has gone into our whisky over the past fifty years,” McKechnie said. The result is a whisky that honours tradition while pushing the boundaries of excellence.
The First Edition offers a rich and complex sensory experience. On the nose, notes of dark fruits, cassis, and candied apricots mingle with delicate cedar and subtle nutty aromas. The palate is equally indulgent, delivering a fusion of caramelised fruit, warming spices, and soft vanilla, all rounded off by a refreshing hint of ginger and citrus.
The packaging of The Balvenie Fifty Collection only further highlights its exclusivity. Designed by Croglin, an expert craft workshop in Cumbria, England, the presentation features over 100 individual elements, each meticulously crafted to the highest standards. The helix structure of the wood is a feat of precision, cut to within 1/10th of a millimetre, and is accompanied by a brass display plated in 14-carat gold—an elegant tribute to the exceptional whisky within.
Having launched at Harrods in August 2024, the First Edition of The Balvenie Fifty Collection is now available at select luxury retailers.
