As expats, the inherent, nomadic freedom to roam wherever we please is something we all share. It’s that same sense of curious independence that the JW Marriott Marquis tries to capture with its showpiece “Wanderlust brunch”.
Spanning the hotel’s fifth floor, the restaurants, walkways, outdoor terrace and even the kitchen are converted into pop-up stations where hungry brunchers can roam free (and get lost) while they stumble across cooking and drinks stations tucked away around pretty much every corner.
Helpfully, you are given a map upon entry — and the exceedingly friendly staff are more than ready to go out of their way to help out — as you negotiate your way through the buffet of Peruvian starters, sushi bars, an outdoor grill, a Mediterranean salad bar and pulled beef and bourguignoning to your heart’s content. The dessert station also has bespoke waffle and donut bars that are made in front of you, and a “candy shop” corridor full of sweet treats.

Make no mistake about it, this is a party brunch, populated by groups of young, beautiful people all dressed as if they are heading on to an awards gala. The music is loud, but it generates the kind of atmosphere that will soon have you shimmying your way to the next helping of freshly made ceviche.
If there is truth in the old adage that the fun of travel is in the journey, then the four hours spent enjoying the maze of stations, exquisite food and party atmosphere is something that we should all share.
