After his career defining performance in last year’s The Iron Claw, Zac Efron is reuniting with A24 for his upcoming film Famous, which sees him playing not one, but two characters who, ostensibly, are identical.
Famous, based on a book of the same name by author Blake Crouch, tells the story of Lancelot Blue Dunkquist, an obsessive fan who lives in his parents’ garage who also happens to be the spitting image of famous movie star, James Jansen. After losing his Job, Dunquist decides to pursue his dream of becoming famous by any means necessary. Efron is thereby slated to play both Dunkquist and Jansen.
Famous is being produced by the creator of Mr. Robot, Sam Esmail, and will be directed by Jody Hill (Eastbound and Down).
The Iron Claw was one of the biggest successes in A24’s already mythical film history, pulling in AED 165 million in the global box office. Since his impressive, heartbreaking performance as wrestler Kevin Von Erich in the film, Efron starred in Netflix’s A Family Affair and the comedy Ricky Stanicky, alongside pro wrestler turned actor, John Cena.
Though perhaps most surprising to everyone except Efron himself, The Iron Claw proved that the former High School Musical star is more than just a singing set of biceps, but rather a talented actor with some formidably dramatic range.
