The Swiss Alps have been an adventure hotspot ever since the Jungfrau peak was first summited way back in 1811. Back then some brave climbers scrambled 4,158m up to the top of the mountain, caught their breath, taken in the view and then headed back down again.
As you’d expect, things are quite a bit different today. Above the Swiss Alpine town of Grindelwald, towers the rather impressive peak, First (2,166m), which boasts a summer time adrenaline fix that will have you completely rewire how you think of the Alps. While you can now spend an afternoon snapping away at the views from the suspension bridge and Cliff Walk, thrillseekers will be lured to try the rocket-fast cable zipline that lets you ‘fly’ down the mountain at speeds topping 80kph.
Depending on your required need for speed, you can choose to zip over the valley below in a multi-person glider (which is built to look like a large eagle) or do so by yourself in zipline harness – both hit the same speeds, and offer stunning views of the Bernese Alps. Adventure opportunities in Switzerland may have started 200 years ago, but it has shown no signs of slowing down since.
