The city of Dubai is set to become a major trending tourist destination in 2020, joining other international cities all boasting major events this year.
The likes of Cairo, Vienna, Galway and Marrakesh are all boasting huge tourist events, and are expected to attract hundreds of millions of visitors between them.
Here’s a round-up of what’s happening, when, and where:
Dubai (UAE) – Expo 2020
Expo 2020 will take place from October 20 to April 2021. Not only will it be one of the most international events of the year, with some 192 pavilions representing as many countries – it’s expected as many as 25 million visitors will flock to the custom-built expo site. The Expo will boast more than 200 restaurants and more than 60 daily events.

Vienna (Austria) – 250th birthday of Beethoven
The Austrian capital will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of the great composer throughout the year. An exhibition of original manuscripts opened on December 19, while renowned conductor Marin Alsop will lead Vienna’s Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.

Lille (France) – the World Design Capital of 2020
The Capital of French Flanders will take the mantle of world design capital from Mexico City this year. Around 50 exhibitors are expected to participate, highlighting how design will play a role in the challenges of tomorrow (and how they can best international crises like climate change, housing, and a more inclusive society). Each season of 2020 will be devoted to another official theme.

Galway (Ireland) – European Capital of Culture
Galway on the west coast of Ireland is one of two European Capitals of Culture in 2020. The city will explore the seasons of the Celtic calendar, with planned events set to begin on February 1. The program will include fireworks displays and a wide range of performances in the city. Saint Patricks Day – on March 17 – is destined to be a true high-point for the city.

Marrakesh (Morroco) – African Capital of Culture
While Europe has Galway, Africa has chosen Marrakesh as its first-ever Capital of Culture. Like its European counterpart, it will demonstrate the diversity of African cultures. The inaugural event will kick off on January 31, with a huge street show including African and Moroccan artists.

Tokyo (Japan) – The Summer Olympics
All eyes will be focused on Japan this summer, as Tokyo hosts the Olympic Games for the second time. The city, which is prepared to welcome a huge number of visitors, has already set up huge statues of the Olympic rings around various parts of the city. The games are set to begin on July 24.
