- Ryan Reynolds claims to have leaked entire Detective Pikachu film
- The hour and 42-minute video on YouTube has been seen by more than 1.5-million people
- The video opens on Justice Smith’s character walking through Rhyme City, before encountering the electric mouse
- Reynolds movies have often relied on guerilla marketing tactics
Ryan Reynolds got Pokemon fans’ hearts racing last night when he apparently uploaded the entire Detective Pikachu flick on YouTube.
The video – which indeed features the eponymous Pokemon Detective – has a run time of 1 hour and 42-minutes (the same as the actual film) and the title, “Pokemon Detective Pikachu: Full Picture”.
The video has since been watched more than 1.5-million times and clocked up an impressive 100,000 likes. Critically, well… we’ll let you be the judge of that.
We’ve linked the entire Detective Pikachu film below:
Upon playing the film, the video certainly appears to be the full Detective Pikachu movie. Hit play, and you get the Warner Bros. logo, followed by Legendary Pictures and The Pokemon Company. Then the movie begins, and Justice Smith’s character is walking through Ryme City.
And then, well, it’s a video of the electric mouse dancing on a loop for an hour and 40-minutes.
Reynolds pretty much sets the bar when it comes to guerilla marketing at this point, after his viral marketing campaigns around the Deadpool franchise made the films both first and second highest-grossing R-rated comic book movies in history.
The new Pokemon Detective film has received similar marketing ploys, including videos from Reynolds talking about ‘method acting’ the electric mouse during filming, as well as boasting of his many voice-acting talents (including being both the voice and the ‘Canadian voice’ of Pikachu)
Detective Pikachu is a bold choice for Pokemon’s initial foray into the world of proper movies. It has released a good deal many animated features before, but this will mark the first time the company has released a live-action film.
Pokemon Detective Pikachu follows the titular yellow mouse as he attempts to solve crimes in Ryhme City. Pikachu drafts in help from a down-on-his-luck kid – who also happens to be the only person who can understand him.
