Ah, summer. That wonderful time of the year where all our worries slowly melt away like an ice cream on a waffle cone. Unfortunately for most of us, the summer also involves working indoors whilst everyone else is out there having fun. We assume that if you’re reading this that, like us, you’re probably not out there somewhere exotic relaxing on the beach. Which sucks. So in order to help alleviate these summer blues we’ve created a list of 10 summer songs (in no particular order) that will take you back to the best times of your life. Y’know, before you got a job and had to deal with that whole “real-life” thing.
10) Bananarama – Cruel Summer
What’s not to love about Bananarama? The girl group are you could ever want from the ’80s and there’s no one we’d rather spend a lonely summer with than Siobhan, Keren, and Sara.
9) Kool & the Gang – Summer Madness
Simply put, this song is cool. Or rather: Kool. It’s the perfect track to chill out to on a hot summer’s day.
8) Richard Marx – Endless Summer Nights
Another ’80s banger here, Richard Marx’s power ballad is almost as impressive as his mullet. But only almost.
7) The Lovin’ Spoonful – Summer in the City
Released in 1966, the Lovin Spoonful’s hit is a timeless classic that is guaranteed to get you up and moving.
6) LFO – Summer Girls
Coming out at a time when ‘New Kids On The Block’ had a couple of hits, I stand by the fact that LFO’s Summer Girls is a modern masterpiece and the perfect slice of mid-2000s that you could ever ask for.
5) Eddie Cochran – Summertime Blues
Complete with footage of a 1959 performance, there’s no denying that Eddie Cochran was one of the coolest men in the world. In fact, he’s so cool we reckon he’d be able to wear a jumper on JBR and not look completely ridiculous. He’d probably die of heat-stroke, but still.
4) DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince – Summertime
Here we have DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince providing us with a glorious ’90s banger that will worm it’s way into your head and reside there all the way until winter.
3) Mungo Jerry – In The Summertime
It’s impossible not to smile listening to this song. It’s more summery than family arguments and almost being late for the flight abroad you’ve booked.
2) Bryan Adams – Summer of ’69
You knew this was coming. It was inevtiable. Try going one summer of your life without listening to Bryan Adams’ iconic track even once. We dare you.
1) Grease – Summer Nights
Well-a-well-a what a suprise. We had to include this song somewhere on the list, even if only to serenade ourselves with John Travolta’s glorious falsetto voice.
So there you have it: a list of ten classic summer songs which will have hopefully revived some memories of piña coladas and the best days of your life. Now get back to work.
