Horror films you can watch now
There are many horror films that, for various reasons, are out of copyright and therefore free to watch online. While some of these films, such as Night of the Living Dead, are genuine classics others are a mix of a well-made period pieces and laughably hokey b-movies, but they are all worth of a look. After all, it’s Halloween and there’s something strangely enjoyable about laying in bed and watching a creaky old horror film.
Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Strangers hold up in a rural Pennsylvania farmhouse and battle constant attacks from dead locals who have been brought back to life by mysterious radiation. George A. Romero’s classic is the film to which nearly every zombie film or TV series owes a debt.
House on Haunted Hill (1958)
Vincent Price gives a stellar performance as the suavely malevolent host of a “haunted house party” who offers his guests $10,000 if they can survive a night in the murderous mansion. Watch for the great Elisha Cook Jr,(he played Wilmer in the “Maltese Falcon”) as the groveling homeowner. The eerie looking home used for the exterior shots is the famous Ennis Brown house in Los Angeles, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
The Last Man On Earth (1964)
Vincent Price again in a great adaptation of Richard Mattherson’s novel I Am Legend. The novel was the inspiration for George A. Romero’s The night of the Living Dead – see above. This film would be remade again with Charlton Heston as The Omega Man (1971) and then with Will Smith as I Am Legend (2007) but this Sixties version has a charm of its own.
Attack of the Giant Leeches (1959)
Roger Corman is the master of the B-movie and this late Fifties effort about giant semi-intelligent leeches living in the swamps in Florida is a great example of monster flicks from that decade that reflect the Cold War paranoia. Here the leeches have been mutated by atomic radiation from nearby Cape Canaveral, now famous for NASA shuttle launches but back then it was the test site for missiles and in 1959 it had just seen the first successful test firing of a Titan intercontinental ballistic missile which would be the mainstay of America’s nuclear weapons deployment.
