According to George R.R. Martin, Game of Thrones currently has three spin-off series that will take place in the fantasy world of Westeros.
He told fans in a blog post, because – as he put it – “internet reports are notoriously unreliable”.
According to Martin, there were originally five spin-offs in the works. But three are moving along nicely.
“We have had five different GAME OF THRONES successor shows in development (I mislike the term ‘spin-offs’) at HBO, and three of them are still moving forward nicely,” Martin wrote. “The one I am not supposed to call THE LONG NIGHT will be shooting later this year, and two other shows remain in the script stage, but are edging closer. What are they about? I cannot say. But maybe some of you should pick up a copy of FIRE & BLOOD and come up with your own theories.”

According to sources, ‘The Long Night’ applies to both episode three of Game of Thrones final season as well as this still unknown new series (most probably based around the original battle between the Children of Men and the humans against the Night King’s undead army.
In 2017, HBO began developing four series that would “explore different time periods of George R.R. Martin’s vast and rich universe”. In 2018, a pilot was ordered for the first spin-off series starring Naomi Watts. It’s expected that Watts will star in ‘The Long Night’ series, which appears to be the furthest along.
According to Martin, the story takes place thousands of years before GoT and it “chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”
Filming for the pilot begins early this summer, with SJ Clarkson as the helm as director (he previously looked after Netflix’s Jessica Jones). There’s no official word that this will ever become a full series, so GoT fans – keep those fingers crossed.
