It’s confirmed—Idris Elba has confirmed himself that he is voicing the famed video game character Knuckles in Sonic The Hedgehog 2.
Elba, who stars Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad, posted on his Instagram and Twitter a photo of Knuckles’ fist, along with the caption “Knock, knock…” along with the hashtags #SonicMovie2 and #Knuckles.
If you grew up playing Sega’s Sonic The Hedgehog games, Knuckles needs no introduction, but just in case you’re new to this—Knuckles is a red echidna, as well as the guardian of the Master Emerald in the Sonic games, a hotheaded fighter.
He’ll likely be teaming up with Ben Schwartz’ Sonic in the sequel, that also stars Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally and Shemar Moore.
Jeff Fowler will direct the sequel to the unexpected massive hit, that grossed $320 million dollars across the world. The film will be written by Pat Casey, Josh Miller and Josh Wittington, based off a story by Casey and Miller.
Elba brings the series some serious gravitas, himself a five time Emmy nominee and Golden Globe winner in 2012 for Best Actor for Luther.
Esquire Middle East spoke to Elba recently about his latest film the Suicide Squad, which was one of the best experiences of his life, he told us.
“I signed on because I really wanted to work with James. He’s a genius, I think. I really was so touched and honored that someone of his talent was really keen to work with me, even though we didn’t have a necessary roadmap of who the character was. I very quickly invested in the exploration of that, because we could go anywhere,” Elba tells Esquire Middle East.
