#F9 debuts in UAE theatres on May 20

With Fast and Furious 9 headed to UAE theatres this week, fans in Dubai were treated to a spectacular light and video show on the tallest building in the world on Monday night.

That’s right, Vin Diesel and company took over the Burj Khalifa with a unique teaser for the upcoming F9, hitting cinemas on May 20. The film won’t hit US theatres until June 25, so fans in the region will be some of the first in the world to see the much anticipated film.

The video has quickly gone viral, with Vin Diesel commenting on Instagram to say that he feels “blessed and grateful” for the Burj appearance.

“Wow!” he also commented.

Vin Diesel has spent time in Dubai and is a big fan of the city, telling me last year that he spent time with a liger—a half lion half tiger while in the emirate, a moment that he’ll never forget.

Fast and Furious 9 was delayed a full year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the first major releases to see a delay. The question is whether the film will be able to set box office records as previous iterations have with restrictions, but with cinemas increasing capacity and vaccines widespread, the film has as good a chance as any to bring audiences back to the favourite popcorned pastime.

The film marks the return of director Justin Lin, who previously helmed films 3-6, including the best in the series—Tokyo Drift, an opinion that will likely get some fans very angry at me for saying, but is an objective fact that no one can dispute.

The film also stars Michelle Rodriguez, John Cena, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, Sung Kang, Hellen Mirren and Charlize Theron.
