37 years after Walter Tevis released his book, The Queen’s Gambit is currently enjoying a second wind courtesy of Netflix and actress Anya Taylor-Joy.
According to Netflix, an incredible 62 million homes watched the series – which follows a young chess prodigy – which has broken a new viewership record for a scripted limited series on the streaming platform.
Netflix says the series was listed in Top 10 recommendations in over 92 countries, and was listed as number 1 in 63 of them.
The series popularity has also brought the initial publication back into the New York Times bestseller list for the first time in four years. Also, searches for the term, “how to play chess” are at a nine-year high on Google.
“I am both delighted and dazed by the response,” remarked the show’s co-creator and director Scott Frank. “It’s just all way beyond what any of us could have imagined. But speaking for my fellow producers and the entire cast and crew of the show, every one of whom made me look better than I actually am, we are most grateful that so many took the time to watch our show. And we all look forward to bringing you our Yahtzee limited series next.”
