Modern Family has ended after nearly 11-years on television.
The season finale aired last night on US network ABC, and concluded with a two-part episode. The ‘mockumentary’ show followed multiple relatives of the goofy Prichett family for 248 episodes, spanning 11 seasons.
Modern Family was hugely successful, clocking in around 14-million watches a week during the height of its popularity. In 2012, it won a Golden Globe for best comedy series in 2012.
The episodes signature structure often saw detached plots pay off with a central joke towares the end of the episode.
“We debuted in 2009, when comedy was tilting heavily toward the cynical,” the show’s co-creator Christopher Lloyd wrote on The Hollywood Reporter.
“And much of it was terribly funny. But there did seem to be an opening for comedy that had heart.”
It proved to be a winning formula.
While many film and TV productions have been delayed, Modern Family finished filming before lockdowns began. And now, actor Nolan Gould (who plays Luke Dunphy) believes the ending could have a bright side:
“I’m glad that in the midst of all that’s going on in the world, there’s going to be a finale for Modern Family,” he told the site Hollywood Life.
“We can bring in a little bit of positivity and a little bit of joy into people’s lives and give people a sense of closure.”
