Harrison Ford’s new flick Call of the Wild – in which the Indiana Jones star teams up with CGI dog – is a box office flop, and looks to lose almost US$50 million when all said and done.
The film has neither been reviewed well nor sold many tickets; when it debuted last week it was beaten to the top spot by Sonic The Hedgehog and The Invisible Man.
Call of the Wild was lambasted for its poor CGI – which came about due to cost-cutting measures during the film’s production. It was slated the film needed US$250 million to break even but is on track for far less than that (currently, it sits at just US$80 million worldwide).
Talking about the film, the Chicago Sun-Times said that while “Harrison Ford does quietly powerful work as author Jack London’s hero, his computer-generated co-star looks weird.”
Ford’s flop comes off the back of another big-screen disappointment for a Hollywood A-lister: Robert Downey Jr. His latest film, Doolittle, seems to have suffered a similar fate; too much bad CGI and too little good story.
It cost around US$175 million to make and grossed just US$217 million around the world.
Disney isn’t usually mentioned in the same sentence as box office flops. This time last year it was gearing up to launch Avengers: Endgame – which went on to become the most profitable film of all time.
