Another year, another super bowl. But football, chicken wings and wardrobe malfunctions aside, one of the best parts of the annual event is the adverts.
It wasn’t the strongest year for comedy commercials during the event watched by almost 100 million people, but there are still quite a few good commercials this year.
Below we’ve gone through ten of the best:
10. Jason Momoa Super Bowl Quicken Loans Rocket Mortgage
Jason Momoa doesn’t need to do much to sell insurance on television; just comb his hair and look pretty. But this advert proves he is not above poking fun at himself, in a surreal spot that shows off Jason Momoa’s “real” body.
9. Porsche’s “The Heist”
What appears to be a car theft from the Porsche Museum in Germany then becomes a charming joyride of cars and characters around Germany. While several historic cars are involved in the advert, it’s the silent electric Taycan model that steals the show.
8. Microsoft “Be The One” Katie Sowers
One of the first serious commercials of the big game, Microsoft devoted its space to Katie Sowers – the offensive assistant coach for the San Francisco 49ers. And while the game didn’t necessarily go Sowers way, this advert sure did.
7. Tide “Super Bowl Now, Laundry Later” with Charlie Day
After a year away from the big game, Tide is back with a spot starring Charlie Day of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (taking the reins from David Harbour). Told to wait to clean his shirt until after the game, it predictably all goes wrong for Day.
6. Mountain Dew Zero Sugar with Bryan Cranston
Basically, this advert is The Shining – but funny. It’s a high-brow concept to be sure, but one that Mountain Dew manages to pull off.
5. #SnickersFixTheWorld
If the idea of a huge Snicker’s bar being dropped into an abyss to appease some sort of deity doesn’t do it for you, then this advert doesn’t offer much else.
4. Hyundai’s “Smaht Pahk”
Lots of adverts tried to pack in the celebrities, but Hyundai took a bit of a back seat. Yes, it uses John Krasinski, Rachel Dratch and Chris Evans – mainly making fun of the way those in Boston pronounce the word “car”.
3. Amazon #BeforeAlexa
What happens in the future without Alexa? Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi imagine a world where we couldn’t ask Alexa to do things for us.
2. Google’s Loretta
Google put together the biggest tearjerker of the night, telling a compelling story through the lens of its own product. Basically, it’s a man sharing a story of love via touching memories of his wife. Much is left up to the imagination (Alzheimer’s?), but it has a load of emotional impact.
1. Jeep’s Groundhog Day with Bill Murray
When it comes to seemingly endless movie references, there was one advert to rule them on. Bill Murray relives the same day over and over again (basically, Groundhog day) but this time has a bit of fun courtesy of his new Jeep Gladiator. The spot gets extra credit for properly sourcing many of the film’s original characters, including Brian Doyle-Murray (his real-life brother and Mayer of Punxsutawney) and Stephen Tobolowsky (who played Ned).
